Things Every Black Woman Should Know to Detect Breast Cancer Early

Ladies check yourself on a regular basis for early detection of breast cancer! It is reported by the American Cancer Society that 98 percent of all breast cancer patients survive when the disease is found early on. The top things that you need to know are as follows:

1. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is the best screening tool used today to find breast cancer early. A mammogram can find cancer in its earliest stages, even before a lump can be felt.

2. Get a mammogram screening. It takes about 15 minutes. Taking Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin about an hour before the exam may help take away any tenderness in the breast you may have. Tell the doctor if you are feeling any pain.

3. All women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year. If you are younger than age 40 with either a family history of breast cancer or other concerns, talk with your health care provider about when to start getting mammograms or other screening tests, like MRI, and how often to have them.

4. The signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women. It is important to know how your breasts normally look and feel. If you notice any change, see your health care provider.
