4 Tips To Prevent Thinning and Hair Loss This Winter

It’s important to keep your hair and scalp moisturized and protected during the winter months. Dry air from central heating as well as the lack of moisture outside can wreak havoc on your scalp triggering inflammation (scalp inflammation is the number one cause of hair loss amongst women).

Ladies, the health of your scalp is just as important as taking care of the length of your hair, because healthy hair starts at the scalp. When your hair is covered in excess sebum, product buildup and dead skin, one of two things can occur; hair loss or thinning coupled with dry, flaky conditions.

Here are four tips to help you prevent thinning and hair loss this winter.

1. Shampoo Regularly

During the cooler months, when you tend to pack on ultra thick moisturizers and styling products, it’s important to wash regularly to rid of buildup. Build-up and clogged follicles are a breeding ground for bacteria and inflammation.

2. Protect your scalp with a scalp serum

Just as you should keep your hair protected from the dry air, your scalp is no different. Reach for a light serum, especially one formulated with essential oils to keep your scalp nourished, moisturized and protected from the elements. Apply the serum directly to your scalp three to four times a week to keep your follicles nourished, your scalp protected and hydrated, and prevent any issues with skin inflammation.

3. Supplement your diet with omega-3 fatty acids

These acids promoted healthy growth of skin, hair and nails. The best sources are evening primrose oil, black currant oil and borage oil, taken in capsules as dietary supplements. You can increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating more wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, fortified eggs, freshly ground flaxseeds or walnuts, or taking a fish oil supplement.

4. Avoid aggressive hair styling

Your strands are fragile, so make sure you treat them as such. Rough styling , aggressive combing or brushing, and tight braids or weaves can all later result in substantial worsening of your hair quality and hair loss.
