Despite the anticipation behind BET’s first drama series “Being Mary Jane,” the pilot which originally aired as a movie back in July 2013 fell short, reports Deadline.

Tuesday’s official debut of “Being Mary Jane” starring the beautiful Gabrielle Union initially drew 3.3 million viewers in the first of two airings, reaping another 1.8 million viewers in an encore airing. While 5 million viewers may not sound too shabby, critics wonder if it’s low ratings are good enough to keep the cameras rolling.

From the creators of “The Game,” Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil, “Being Mary Jane” starring Gabrielle Union, 43 follows the story of Mary, a TV personality with a bright future at a cable news station whose personal and family life constantly collide. Luckily for fans of the series, the Akil’s promise at least 7 more episodes this season. Will “Being Mary Jane” withstand the test of time?
