10 Interview Fashion Tips

Finding a job, especially one you like, has become very difficult for most people.  Whether you’re working in a corporate office, or serving tasty snacks to the chicest people in town, every job has a “look”.

Your appearance proceeds you before you even shake hands with the interviewer. So when you step in that office for that interview make sure that you are dressed the part. Here are a few tips to help you get that perfect job!

  • Ditch the ‘Goth’ Look: Yes black is professional and probably the easiest to wear, but try experimenting with other conservative colors such as grey and navy.

  • Wild Nail Polish: This tip is for women or men. Extremely long or uncut nails are a real turnoff, too. Your nails should be groomed and neat.

  • Tone down the Bling: Don’t wear more than two rings per hand or one earring per ear. And no face jewelry or ankle bracelets allowed.

  • Step up your shoe game: Your potential boss doesn’t want to see your new Jeffrey Campbell clogs or platform sneakers. Keep it simple yet fashionable. Open-Toed, backless shoes and crazy colored platforms are a definite no-no. Out-of-date shoes should be thrown out or kept for other occasions. Like walking in trenches.

  • Don’t Wear that Skirt.. yes THAT one : If you are wearing a skirt, tights or stockings should be worn regardless of the season.  Your club skirt should never double as an interview skirt.  Leggings should never be worn by themselves. Stockings can be in neutral colors or a fashion color to match your shoes.

  • How old is that Suit? Even if your mother tells you how darling you look, your interviewer can probably smell an old suit a mile away. How? There are certain dimensions that a well-tailored suit will have regardless of the person or the budget.  If you are considering a few years in a corporate or office setting, it is only in your best interest to invest in a few good suits. You’ll thank us later.

  • No Leather Jackets for Men or Women: Even leather blazers are not good for interviewing purposes. They look like outerwear. As a matter of fact, if it’s not a leather accessory, don’t wear it.

  • Not my Louis Vuitton Monogram purse!: Purses and briefcases should be conservative and inconspicuous.

The Second Interview tip!
We don’t want you to spend your savings for an interview, and chances are, you will have to undergo a second and possibly a third meeting before you receive the position.  In most cases, it will be a different person.  If you plan on wearing the same suit, or similar outfit, switch up your outfit by wearing a different color blouse, shirt, or scarf.
In cases where you are interviewing in a more creative environment, you can be a little more adventurous on choosing a great look for the interview. The goal is to prove to the interviewer what’s behind the outfit. To prove that you are an asset to the company and not a distraction.

Your style sense can make or break you moving onto the next step in your career so it is important that you take a second look in the mirror before you head out the door!
