Tips for Fashionistas: Updating Your Wardrobe on a Budget

When the seasons change, we all get that itch to update our wardrobes to keep up with the newest and hottest trends. But, sometimes, it can be financially difficult for even the flyest fashionista. No need to feel like you have to keep up with the Joneses. Here are some tips for updating your wardrobe by using what you already own.

Make your accessories do double duty

That chain necklace you’ve had for years? Wrap it around your wrist a few times and voila! It’s a multi-strap bracelet, or try wrapping it around your hair to serve as a chic chain headband.

D.I.Y.

That’s right. Do it yourself! D.I.Y. projects are huge this season — everything from high- waist jeans turned high waist cut off shorts to a plain colored top or dress turned edgy with a few splashes of bleach. So, grab your scissors, bleach, chains and creativity and get to designing.

Flip it backward

If you take a good look in your closet, you may be able to see if some of your simple cardigans or dresses would look cute worn backward. Don’t knock it before you try it. That dress with the zipper detailing down the back would look super cute flipped around to the front or maybe vice-versa.

Shop your boyfriend’s closet

Your boyfriend is the perfect person to “borrow” pieces from if the two of you aren’t too far apart in size. A classic button up shirt, relaxed boyfriend jeans and a preppy oversized boyfriend blazer are the key pieces to keep your eye on.

Have a clothing swap party

Gather a small group of friends together with diverse styles to do a clothing swap. Swap gently-used to never-worn clothing among each other, and don’t forget about shoes and accessories. Add some good music, snacks and a delicious mixed drink, and get the party started!
