Hair Care Fact and Fiction: the Truth Behind Healthy Hair

Since we were young women, we have been told a lot of secrets to being beautiful. Although some have deemed true (like drinking water helps preserve clear skin), many have been wise tales (like putting mayonnaise on your breasts make them grow). Anyway, here are a few Hair Care facts that will put those silly rumors to shame.

The Fiction: Cutting your hair every other week will make it grow longer, faster.

The Fact:  “Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not,” says John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City. Your trim schedule has nothing to with the growth of your hair. Hormones may affect your hair growing faster than normal every so often, but keeping a cutting schedule will only keep split ends at bay.

The Fiction: Coloring your hair will damage your hair.

The Fact: We’ve come such a long way with technology, of course they would bring us a healthy hair dye.  Actually, many hair dyes– whether in the salon or DIY contain extra conditioner that might make your hair easier to manage.  Though this doesn’t mean that you should ditch a professional consultation altogether, you can put away the kool-aid.

The Fiction: A cold water rinse after a shampoo will give you shinier hair.

The Fact: It won’t so unless you enjoy the after-chill, you can put a hold on that theory.

The Fiction: Stress causes hair loss.

The Fact: On a daily basis, you lose anywhere between 50- 120 strands a day.  It is possible to lose a few more when you experience catastrophic life changes, but no worries- hair grows back.

The Fiction: Brushing your hair 100 strokes a night will make it grow.

The Fact: Relax Repunzel, over-brushing harms your hair more than it helps it.  Brushing your hair should be left to only when you’re styling it, otherwise you’re just adding more stress on your hair follicles causing them to weaken.

The Fiction: Pulling out grays bring more gray hairs.

The Fact: Pulling your hair out can cause scars that may lead to an infection in your roots. Gross right? Just let live and either embrace it or color it.  There’s no way to stop it from coming.
