Janelle Monae Talks Pretty Behind the Scenes at ‘Rolling Out’ Cover Shoot
Aug 10, 2011 | Comments 16
Janelle Monae and her glam squad recently gave Talking Pretty the scoop on Janelle’s signature look during her rolling out cover shoot. The singer is not only known for her quirky song lyrics and performances, but also for her classic tuxedo style and signature retro updo. Miss Monae was styled in black Chanel skinny pants, a custom black tuxedo jacket and tuxedo shirt, as well as a custom tie and jeweled brooch. To finish off her look, she rocked a sky-high pair of YSL pumps.
Janelle Monae is truly a timeless beauty, and her makeup artist, Malika James, agrees. While we were talking makeup and beauty and discussing Monae’s timeless swagger, here is what James shared with us. –mckenzie harris
On Monae’s Signature Look
“I went for the classic Janelle Monae look that was created about five years ago. I like to do a light contour and highlighting, with a rose blush and nude lip with just a hint of peach. The feature I like to play up most with Janelle are her eyes. I’ll use top and bottom lashes for the baby doll effect that she likes to give. Janelle to me is iconic already. You can look back at her pictures years from now and they will still be timeless.”
On How Monae Feels About Makeup
“Janelle appreciates makeup but isn’t makeup crazy. We both agree that less is best. She wants people to pay attention to her music and not as much focus on her makeup, hair, clothes, etc. But I would love to give Janelle a super sexy smoky eye, it’s something very different. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in that kind of look.”
How Monae Keeps Her Skin Looking Flawless
“Janelle has beautiful skin … it’s just hereditary. I use a light Cetaphil moisturizer on her and when she’s traveling I’ll use Crème de la Mer hydrating serum. She also loves to use Cargo powder. Makeup is about enhancing and once you figure out what to enhance, it’s not rocket science anymore.”
