Sunday night, Bravo debuted a new show called Fashion Queens. The show is hosted by Bevy Smith, and featured Real Housewives of Atlanta hairstylists Miss Lawrence and Derek J.
They spilled the tea on a lot of things but their natural hair talk sparked a little bit of mayhem on the net.
Bevy Smith pulled up a picture of Solange Knowles performing at SXSW, and asked the featured hairstylists what they thought of her ‘fro. Miss Lawrence’s reaction was that some women could go for the natural look by working it with a little weave, and Derek J’s response was that “Natural hair isn’t for everyone.” That answer blew up the net!
Some people agreed with his response. @Ican0NLYbeME said ” I’m natural but natural hair isn’t for everyone. It shouldn’t be that way but hey creamy crazy was created for a reason!”@Serenity_Speak said, “If you cant maintain your hair with a perm it’s gone be hard to do it without one #ijs folks walking around looking crazy lol.” @Meikab85 added, “That’s so true I know a few ppl that look like they from the Color Purple.”
Others went against what Derek said. @DoctorRenee said, “Be SMART with your passion about hair, not ignorant. Promote healthy hair care, relaxed AND natural #teamNatural.” She then said, “Society has clearly brainwashed us into thinking what’s an “appropriate” look for our hair..” @ButtaBaby typed, “ This natural hair shade on fashion queens is uncool and unnecessary.”
My thoughts: I don’t have a problem with natural hair I just think that it should be well kept and tamed. Weaves and perms aren’t the best route to go but some people simply can’t maintain their hair so I see where the cop out comes from. As far as weaves, people need to purchase quality hair that will last and look natural and not a mouthful of negativity lol.
All in all , I’d say that black women should do what works for them. Whatever you choose to rock just make sure that you rock it the best way that you can and keep it maintained.
What do you think?
