‘Single Ladies’ Designer Anthony L. Williams Dishes on Styling Stacey Dash
Stacey Dash has made a serious comeback since her Clueless days. Co-starring in VH1′s hit romance-comedy series, “Single Ladies,” as the classy boutique owner “Val,” she has her viewers drooling over her stylish wardrobe selections. Val is always dressed to kill in the hottest trends, qualifying her as a fashion inspiration to fashionistas everywhere.
Throughout the show, we’ve seen Val in sexy body-hugging numbers, structured shoulders and blazers that exude femininity and accentuate her curves. But Dash can’t claim all the credit, Anthony L. Williams, the stylist for Dash’s character on the show, gives us the scoop on how the magic happens. Check out the full interview here. –mckenzie harris
On Working With Dash
The great thing about working with Stacey is that, not only does she appreciate fashion, she understands it, and she knows it.
On the Styling Process
The process on styling Val, the character, starts with simply a stack of papers, also known as a script. It is my job along with my assistant to go through the script and find out the specific details of every scene that applies to my character. If there’s a place in the script where she’s going to be seen for a long length of time, I try to make sure we put the hottest looks in those areas. If there’s a scene where her dress is being unzipped by a young man or old man … you never know with “Single Ladies” … we need to, most definitely, have something in place where her dress is being unzipped.
On How the Fit Session Works
After we’ve selected the clothes, and we’ve gone shopping, we go through and place the clothes where they should be for the script. I go into the fitting knowing in my mind exactly what I want her to look like for each scene. The number one thing I bring into a fitting with Stacey Dash is my confidence because if I’m confident about a look that I’ve chosen for her, then she, most definitely, is more receptive, and she is confident on how she will look on screen.
After you’ve solidified all of your looks, and they’ve been approved by the actress, the head of the costume department, as well as the producers, the clothes are then shipped to a truck [and] are prepped and prepared for her to dress daily for each scene of the show.
