The first Friday of April 2026 is not wasting any time with good music. Across R&B, hip-hop, funk, alternative soul, and beyond, this week’s music release slate is one of the more substantial single-day drops of the year so far. Here is what landed.
Mary J. Blige, ‘Want Love’
Mary J. Blige continues building momentum in 2026 with her new single ‘Want Love,’ the nine-time Grammy winner’s second music release of the year. The track follows ‘More Than A Lover’ which arrived in February, and comes ahead of her Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM beginning May 1. Blige has spent more than three decades operating at the intersection of classic R&B and contemporary production, and “Want Love” stays firmly in that territory.
Thundercat, Distracted
Distracted is Thundercat’s fifth studio album, released through Brainfeeder on April 3, 2026, and his first in six years following It Is What It Is. The 15-track album features contributions from A$AP Rocky, WILLOW, Tame Impala, Channel Tres, Lil Yachty, and a previously unreleased collaboration with the late Mac Miller, with primary production handled by superproducer Greg Kurstin alongside additional work from Flying Lotus and Kenny Beats. The music record captures the addled feeling of contemporary overstimulation, with Thundercat’s trademark dark humor running throughout.
Swae Lee, SAME DIFFERENCE
Swae Lee’s new album SAME DIFFERENCE lands as the culmination of a steady run of music releases over recent months. The project moves between upbeat tracks and more introspective material, covering the range of what he has been building toward.
YG ft. Ty Dolla $ign, ‘TEACH YOU HOW TO LUH ME’
YG and Ty Dolla $ign connect on a collaboration that puts both artists squarely in their element. The result is a smooth, hook-driven track that fits naturally alongside either artist’s catalog.
Ravyn Lenae ft. Dominic Fike, ‘Reputation’
Ravyn Lenae and Dominic Fike bring complementary instincts to ‘Reputation,’ a track that benefits from the contrast between their sounds. It is one of the more intriguing collabs of the week.
Arlo Parks, Ambiguous Desire
Ambiguous Desire finds Arlo Parks stepping further into club-born rhythms and her most open, self-defined writing to date, drawing energy from dance floors in Los Angeles, New York, and London. The 12-track album runs through breakbeats, slow-burning relationship tracks, and a collaboration with Sampha, with production from Paul Epworth, Buddy Ross, and Andrew Sarlo. It is very much the sound of youthful freedom, built for those three-minute stretches where you let everything go.
Also worth noting
Ne-Yo dropped ‘Up Out & Gone,’ Chxrry released ‘Hall of Fame,’ and PJ Morton continues his run of soulful releases with new music that plays to the Grammy winner’s strengths.
