The actress leaned on a decade old Versace archive and one small brooch to keep her Spider-Man press tour theme going.
Zendaya has turned her Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour into a running fashion bit, and the Shanghai premiere gave her yet another chance to play with it. After stops that included vintage Spider-Man t-shirts and spiderweb shaped jewelry, the actress arrived on the Shanghai carpet in an archival Versace couture gown that nodded to the film without leaning on anything obvious. Stylist Law Roach, who has worked with Zendaya throughout the tour, pulled the piece from Atelier Versace’s spring 2016 couture collection under Donatella Versace’s direction, a design that Roach noted still felt current nearly a decade after it debuted.
Web inspired without saying so
The gown itself did the visual storytelling. Ivory bandage style fabric wrapped around Zendaya’s frame and rose back up toward a scooped neckline, with black crystal covered mesh filling the spaces in between to create a web like texture across the silhouette. Fine pleating, sculptural draping and an asymmetric bodice shaped the gown further, while a thigh high slit kept it moving as she walked. Signature Versace touches, including harness style straps and metallic buckles, gave the archival piece a sharper, more modern edge.
One brooch tied it together
Rather than stacking on jewelry, Zendaya let a single piece carry the reference. A Chopard brooch shaped like a spider, built around a 19 carat yellow sapphire surrounded by diamonds, sat pinned at her waist, offering the clearest nod to the film without tipping into costume territory. White Miss Z pumps from Christian Louboutin and simple diamond studs rounded out the rest of the look, keeping the focus on the gown and the brooch.
Bangs and a bold beauty shift
Hair and makeup pushed the look further from the soft, natural style Zendaya has favored on much of the press tour. Hairstylist Ursula Stephen gave her long, sleek extensions paired with sharp micro bangs, a style with a slightly rebellious edge that contrasted with the gown’s polish. Makeup artist Nikki Wolff built out a smoky, Cleopatra inspired eye using bronze, charcoal, black and navy tones swept beneath the waterline, paired with soft flushed cheeks and a nude gloss lip, a departure from the bare faced trend that has dominated red carpets in recent weeks.

Part of a longer fashion arc
The Shanghai look joins a string of distinct styling choices Zendaya has cycled through during the film’s rollout, from a goddess inspired aesthetic at an earlier premiere to a wet bixie cut and bold red eye makeup at a New York photo call. Each stop has leaned into a different mood while keeping the same underlying thread running through it. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day set for release July 31, the tour has become as much a showcase for Zendaya and Roach’s styling as it has for the film itself.
