Aiko’s last studio album, Chilombo, landed in March 2020 right before pandemic lockdowns changed everything about how music got released and consumed. That album still went on to top the Billboard R&B chart, land at number two on the Billboard 200, and earn three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, before eventually getting certified platinum. How does Larry June fit into this album era
This is where Aiko’s rollout has been smarter than most people gave it credit for. In July she appeared on Larry June’s California Dream, a standout from his album Who Coppin, marking the first time she and June had teamed up on a song since their relationship became public. Rather than treating the collaboration as a side note, Aiko folded it directly into her own comeback timeline, using it to keep her name active in hip hop spaces while Westside Whimsy finished coming together behind the scenes.
