The hidden crisis behind Black maternal mortality — and the resources fighting back.

Congratulations! Bringing a new life into the world ranks among life’s most profound miracles, one that fills a household with joy and gratitude. But that same season can just as easily bring sadness, anxiety, and fear, and for Black mothers, those emotions often carry extra weight. The health risks tied to pregnancy and childbirth remain far higher for Black women, making the emotional load of this chapter even heavier.

The Maternal Health Gap Black Women Still Face

Federal health data paints a sobering picture. Black women in the United States are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women, with a maternal mortality rate hovering around 50 deaths per 100,000 live births compared with roughly 15 for White non-Hispanic women. The overwhelming majority of these deaths are considered preventable, yet the numbers persist year after year, worsened by conditions like postpartum anxiety and depression that too often go undiagnosed or dismissed.

Joy and Distress Can Live in the Same Season

For many Black mothers, pregnancy and childbirth arrive as a tangle of celebration and distress rather than one clean emotion. Holding space for both sides of that spectrum, instead of pretending only the joyful parts exist, allows mothers to process what they’re actually feeling. With the right support system in place, that complicated mix becomes far easier to carry.

A Week Built Around Black Maternal Health

Black Maternal Mental Health Week, observed July 19 through July 25, exists to spotlight exactly this gap in care and awareness. In its honor, a running list of resources has been gathered for new mothers and moms-to-be in the Black community, each one built to help them feel seen, heard, and genuinely supported through a season that can otherwise feel isolating.

How to Show Up for the New Mothers in Your Life

Anyone with a new mother in their circle can help lighten the load in tangible ways. Dropping off a meal, taking a load of laundry, or holding the baby for an hour can make an outsized difference for someone still recovering physically and emotionally. Black Maternal Mental Health Week is a reminder that Black mothers deserve more than survival statistics. They deserve care that meets them where they are, resources built with their reality in mind, and a community willing to show up long after the flowers and casseroles stop arriving. That kind of support, sustained well past one designated week, is what actually moves the needle.
