The legendary French fashion house brings 80 years of couture craftsmanship — and celebrity glamour — to Atlanta’s SCAD FASH Museum.
While fashion’s most-watched night unfolds on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, there’s no need to book a flight to the Big Apple to witness Met Gala royalty up close. Atlanta is having its own couture moment — and it’s one the city won’t soon forget.
SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film is currently home to Dior: Crafting Fashion, an exhibition as breathtaking as anything walking the Met steps. Developed exclusively by Dior Heritage for the Atlanta institution, the show is a masterclass in what it truly means to make fashion — not just wear it.
A House Nearly Eight Decades in the Making
The exhibition spans the full arc of Dior’s storied legacy, honoring all eight creative directors who have shaped the house across its nearly 80-year history. Eighty-eight dresses anchor the show, each one a testament to the meticulous artistry that defines haute couture at its most elevated.
Rafael Gomes, Executive Director of SCAD FASH and Atlanta exhibitions, describes the collaboration between SCAD and Dior as something genuinely rare. The partnership first took shape in the south of France, where a smaller version of the exhibition debuted. The connection between the two institutions proved strong enough that Dior expanded its vision, bringing a larger, more immersive version to Atlanta — a significant vote of confidence for the city’s growing cultural stature.
Dior’s Celebrity Corner
One of the exhibition’s most magnetic sections is a curated corner devoted entirely to celebrity couture — gowns designed specifically for high-profile clients and landmark occasions. Visitors can stand inches away from pieces worn by cultural icons including Rihanna, Lupita Nyong’o, and Lady Gaga, each dress a one-of-a-kind creation made for a singular moment in time.
The final look in the exhibition belongs to Elle Fanning — and that choice carries a quiet significance. Fanning, who hails from Georgia, represents both the global reach of Dior and a personal thread connecting the house to the very state hosting this celebration of its legacy.
The Revenge Dress, Reborn
Just steps away from the celebrity couture corner, one of fashion history’s most emotionally charged pieces commands its own quiet reverence. The “Revenge Dress” worn by Princess Diana — the off-shoulder black gown that became one of the most photographed looks of the 1990s — is on display, paired with the Lady Dior bag that Diana famously carried. The bag’s name is no coincidence. The handbag was gifted to Diana by the French first lady in 1995, and the house named it in her honor. It is, without question, one of the most iconic Met Gala-adjacent looks in fashion history, dating to 1996, and seeing it in person carries a weight that no photograph can fully replicate.
More Than Fashion — A Lesson in Craft
Beyond the glamour, Dior: Crafting Fashion carries a deeper message that feels especially urgent right now. In an era dominated by fast fashion and disposable trends, the exhibition offers something increasingly rare: a window into the painstaking process behind true craftsmanship.
Gomes underscores this point with genuine conviction. For a new generation raised on fast fashion and fleeting trends, the exhibition is an education in quality, patience, and the kind of skill that is slowly disappearing from the broader fashion landscape. SCAD FASH positions itself not just as a museum, but as a resource for the Atlanta community — a space where art, education, and culture converge.
