Makeup artist Sam Fine drew on more than 20 years of collaboration with the actress to create a sculpted, jewel-forward look that matched the grandeur of the evening.
Gabrielle Union arrived at the 2026 Tiffany Blue Book Gala on April 16 as one of the evening’s most talked-about guests, her beauty look drawing comparisons to the rare gemstones on display around her. The Park Avenue Armory in New York City had been transformed into a hidden garden for the occasion, the annual event where Tiffany unveils its most extraordinary high jewelry collection of the year, and Union’s presence matched the grandeur of the setting from the moment she walked in.
The atmosphere was built for spectacle, and Union delivered.

The man behind the look
Makeup artist Sam Fine has been working with Union since her first Essence cover in 2005, making this collaboration more than two decades in the making. Fine is also the author of Fine Beauty: Beauty Basics and Beyond for African-American Women, a book that reflects the same philosophy he brought to the gala. His approach has never chased trends. He focuses on well-prepared skin, deliberate structure, and finishes that enhance rather than compete with the person wearing them.
For this appearance, Fine worked exclusively with Black Radiance, the accessible beauty brand whose products anchored every step of Union’s look.
How the look was built
Fine started with Black Radiance’s Color Perfect Liquid Makeup in the shade Bisque to lay a smooth, even base across Union’s skin. He followed that with a deeper-toned foundation stick to add warmth and dimension, giving the face the kind of depth that reads well both in person and on camera.
From there, Fine moved into sculpting. Using the True Complexion Contour Palette, he defined Union’s cheekbones, temples, and jawline with precision, creating structure without heaviness.
For the eyes, Fine chose a rich matte brown shadow applied in a soft smoky manner that complemented Union’s features without pulling focus. A subtle winged liner and wispy lashes finished the eye, with Body Building Mascara adding the final touch. The lips were kept restrained and intentional, with the Perfect Tone Lip Color in Boss Brown layered under a clear gloss for a look that was polished without being overdone.
The jewels led the night
Fine made a deliberate choice to let the Tiffany pieces drive the visual story. His approach to Union’s makeup was calibrated around that intention, dialing back where another artist might have pushed forward. The result was a face that framed the jewelry rather than competed with it.
Hairstylist Larry Sims extended that restraint into Union’s hair, crafting a chic side-part bun that kept the focus clean and the neckline clear. A chocolate manicure and a black and brown gown completed the picture.
What makes this collaboration last
Fine has credited Union’s personality as a significant part of what makes their work together succeed. She approaches the process without rigidity, bringing an ease that creates room for genuine creative exchange rather than a mechanical execution of a brief. That dynamic has held for more than 20 years, and the result at the Tiffany Blue Book Gala reflected it.
The look was not built around a trend cycle or a single viral moment. It was built around a woman, a setting, and a philosophy that has stayed consistent since the two first worked together in the early 2000s. That kind of continuity is rare in an industry that moves fast, and the Tiffany Blue Book Gala gave it a stage worthy of the occasion.
