Mercury retrograde begins Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, and lasts until Nov. 13, staying in Scorpio the entire time. Venus has also been retrograde since Oct. 3, and both planets return to direct motion on the same day, Nov. 13.
In astrology, Mercury governs communication, technology and travel, so believers expect missed messages, delayed trips and glitchy devices. There’s no scientific evidence that planets shape daily life, but plenty of people treat the stretch as a reminder to slow down. This year, the retrograde also falls over Halloween and Election Day.
When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?
The retrograde runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 13, and the shadow period that follows ends Nov. 29. The midpoint arrives Nov. 4, when Mercury lines up with the sun at 12 degrees Scorpio. It’s the third and final Mercury retrograde of 2026.
It’s also less common than most. This retrograde never leaves Scorpio, something that last happened in 2019.
What does Mercury retrograde actually mean?
It’s an optical illusion. Mercury doesn’t reverse direction. Mercury and Venus appear to move backward when they pass Earth in their orbits. From our view, the planet looks like it slides back across the sky for a few weeks.
Astrologers read that backward motion as a time to revisit, review and rethink. The Cut’s Aliza Kelly describes it as a push to notice the details people miss when they move too fast.
Why is this Mercury retrograde different?
Because Venus is retrograde at the same time. In astrology, Venus rules love, beauty, money and values. Venus turned retrograde in Scorpio on Oct. 3 and moves back into Libra on Oct. 25. Kelly says the overlap pushes people to reassess what they want, and whether their daily choices match it.
Scorpio adds intensity. The sign is linked to secrets, intimacy and transformation, so astrologers warn about overanalyzing texts, rehashing old regrets and assuming the worst about people.
Does Mercury retrograde overlap with Election Day?
Yes. The Nov. 3 midterm elections fall right in the middle of the retrograde. Whether or not you follow astrology, it’s a good reason to double-check your voter registration, polling place, ID requirements and mail ballot deadlines before you head out. Early voting is already underway in many states.
What do astrologers say to avoid during Mercury retrograde?
Astrologer Susan Miller advises against buying electronics or cars during Mercury retrograde, since Mercury rules those items. She also suggests waiting to sign legal documents until after it ends.
Venus retrograde comes with its own warnings. Miller recommends putting off cosmetic procedures and dramatic hair changes until after Nov. 13, though she says trims are fine. If you’ve been planning a big chop or a bold new color, astrologers would tell you to wait a few weeks.
How should you handle Mercury retrograde?
Keep it practical. Reread texts before you hit send, back up your phone and laptop and give yourself extra time when you travel. When a message stirs you up, sleep on it before you reply. As the church mothers would say, the devil is busy, so don’t give him an opening.
When does Mercury retrograde end?
Both planets turn direct on Nov. 13. Astrologers say the effects fade gradually through the shadow period, which ends in late November. By Thanksgiving, the sky should settle down. Whether your group chat survives until then is up to you.
