For many women, noticing extra strands in a brush, shower drain or on a pillow can quickly become a source of worry. Hair is closely connected to appearance and self image, so even relatively subtle changes in density can feel significant.
Hair loss is also far from unusual. Research has found that roughly one third of women experience some degree of hair loss during their lives, with the likelihood increasing with age. By age 50, as many as 40% of women may have noticeable hair loss.
Experts say the reasons behind increased shedding are rarely straightforward. Several factors can overlap, making it difficult to identify one single cause.
Weight loss and nutrition can play a role
One factor receiving increased attention is rapid weight loss.
Hair is considered a nonessential tissue by the body, meaning that during periods of significant calorie restriction or metabolic stress, the body may redirect energy toward functions it considers more important. As a result, hair follicles can enter a resting phase, followed by increased shedding several months later.
Weight-loss medications can sometimes contribute indirectly when they significantly reduce appetite and overall food intake. If someone isn’t getting enough protein or key nutrients, hair growth may be affected.
Iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D and zinc are among the nutrients associated with healthy hair growth. Adequate protein and complex carbohydrates also provide important nutritional support.
This is one reason sudden shedding may appear well after the event that triggered it. Hair growth operates on a cycle, so changes in the body may not become visible in the hair immediately.
Hormones, stress and metabolic health matter
Hormonal changes are another common factor.
Estrogen supports the hair growth cycle, and fluctuations during perimenopause can lead to increased shedding. After menopause, lower estrogen levels can contribute to a shorter growth phase, resulting in finer strands and reduced regrowth.
Metabolic health may also influence hair. Elevated insulin levels can increase levels of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a hormone that can cause susceptible hair follicles to shrink over time.
Stress is another potential contributor. Prolonged stress can affect the normal hair growth cycle and push follicles into a resting stage earlier than expected. Changes in sleep, eating habits and scalp health that accompany stressful periods may further affect hair.
Digestive health has also been proposed as a factor because the body needs to absorb nutrients effectively to support normal hair and scalp function. However, the underlying cause of shedding can vary considerably from one person to another.
Finding the cause is the first step
Because hair loss can have multiple triggers, experts recommend looking beyond the amount of hair being shed and determining what type of loss is occurring.
A dermatologist or qualified hair and scalp specialist may evaluate the scalp and recommend blood tests to check for nutritional or hormonal factors. Testing can help identify issues involving iron stores and other nutrients that may contribute to shedding.
Treatment should be individualized. Minoxidil, an FDA approved hair loss treatment, can help certain people reduce shedding and support regrowth, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone and doesn’t necessarily address the underlying reason for the hair loss.
Depending on the cause, a specialist may recommend dietary changes, adjustments to hair-care practices or other targeted treatments. Experts also caution against assuming that every hair-growth supplement or serum will work. Products designed for broad use may not address a person’s specific nutritional needs.
Regrowth takes patience
One of the hardest parts of dealing with hair loss is the waiting period. Even after the underlying trigger has been addressed, hair generally doesn’t return overnight.
It can take several months before noticeable improvement appears, making consistency important. Keeping the scalp clean and maintaining a regular washing routine can also support scalp health, even when shedding feels particularly noticeable during washing.
Most importantly, increased shedding doesn’t automatically mean permanent hair loss. Because hair loss can stem from temporary nutritional, hormonal or lifestyle changes, identifying the trigger can provide a clearer path forward.
For women experiencing persistent or significant shedding, getting an evaluation can be more useful than constantly monitoring the amount of hair in a brush or shower. Hair loss can be emotionally difficult, but understanding the cause may make the situation feel more manageable and help guide the next steps toward regrowth.
