Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Thursday, March 12, spending time with young patients and hospital staff in a visit that was as personal as it was purposeful.
The Duchess of Sussex, who grew up in Los Angeles and returned to Southern California in 2020 alongside her husband Prince Harry, arrived at the hospital wearing an all white outfit topped with a beige sweater and a black face mask. She made her way to the hospital’s Creative Oasis, where she joined patients for a watercolor painting session, sharing in a Hello Kitty drawing with one young patient. She also took time to visit children who were confined to their rooms due to the severity of their health conditions, ensuring those patients received a personal moment as well.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles documented the visit on Instagram, describing the afternoon as a powerful reminder of how creativity can foster joy, connection and healing for patients going through difficult and often frightening medical experiences.
The visit launched a monthlong fundraising campaign
Meghan’s appearance was not a standalone gesture. It served as the opening moment of CHLA’s Make March Matter campaign, an annual monthlong fundraising initiative that draws on Los Angeles celebrities and businesses to support the hospital’s lifesaving care, research and innovation programs. The campaign is designed to help ensure that sick and critically injured children in the region have access to quality care regardless of their families’ financial circumstances.
This is not the first time Meghan has shown up for children at this particular hospital. Two years ago she visited CHLA for a Literally Healing session, a reading program that provides patient families with more than 65,000 books each year. Her return this month signals a sustained personal connection to the institution rather than a one-time appearance.
A busy and meaningful start to 2026 for the royal couple
The hospital visit is part of a broader stretch of purposeful activity for Meghan and Harry in the early months of this year. In February, the couple traveled to Jordan on a two day trip at the invitation of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization. The visit was intended to draw attention to communities affected by war and displacement, continuing the couple’s focus on humanitarian visibility on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Harry and Meghan are scheduled to travel to Australia in April, their first visit to the country since a royal tour in 2018. That trip carries significant emotional weight for the couple. It was during the 2018 visit, just five months after their wedding, that they announced Meghan’s pregnancy with their first child, Archie, while attending the Invictus Games in Sydney. Roughly a year and a half after that tour, the couple announced their decision to step back from their roles as senior royals amid a widely reported rift with the palace.
The visit comes during a period of personal transition
Meghan’s return to CHLA also comes at a moment of professional change. Netflix announced on March 6 that its partnership with Meghan around her lifestyle brand, As Ever, would be discontinued following the end of her show With Love, Meghan. A Netflix spokesperson acknowledged Meghan’s vision for the brand and expressed support for the work done together, though no further collaboration was announced.
Despite that development, Meghan’s calendar remains full. She is set to headline a wellness retreat in Australia next month, with ticket prices ranging from approximately $1,930 to $2,288.
For now, Thursday’s visit offered a quieter and more intimate reflection of who Meghan continues to be away from the headlines, a woman who grew up in Los Angeles, returned to it by choice and keeps finding ways to show up for the city she calls home.
