Eddie Murphy is officially a grandfather well, the father of a grandfather. The comedy legend confirmed that his son Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence, daughter of his longtime collaborator Martin Lawrence, have welcomed their first child together, a baby girl named Ari Skye.

Murphy made the announcement at the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony on April 18, where he was being honored with the prestigious distinction at the 51st annual event, set to air on Netflix on May 31. The 65 year old, who has 10 children of his own, was characteristically candid about the new arrival and equally laid-back about handing out parenting tips to the new parents.

A new chapter for the Murphy Lawrence family

Eric, 36, and Jasmin, 30, had announced their pregnancy in February 2026, just eight months after their private wedding ceremony in May 2025. The couple shared the happy news on Instagram with a black and white photo of Eric cradling Jasmin’s baby bump, captioned with a heartfelt message of gratitude.

Martin Lawrence, who has three daughters, was visibly overjoyed when the pregnancy was first announced, taking to Instagram to share how the news had filled his heart with love and gratitude. The 61 year old comedian described becoming a grandfather for the first time as nothing short of a blessing.

The two families have long been connected through film Eddie and Martin have been frequent co-stars over the years but it was the younger generation that truly brought them together. Eddie told a morning news program that both fathers were on board from the start, noting that Eric and Jasmin look wonderful together, with some joking from all sides that any child of theirs was bound to be funny.

He’s admitted that his youngest two children, Izzy and Max whom he shares with wife Paige Butcher, whom he married in July 2024  have a noticeably more relaxed upbringing than his older kids. Eric Murphy, born in July 1989, is Eddie’s eldest son from his previous relationship with Paulette McNeely. While his father made a career of being in front of the camera, Eric has gravitated toward behind the scenes work, including voice work for the Megamind franchise. He also made headlines in 2024 when he performed ADR automated dialogue replacement for his father in Beverly Hills Cop, Axel F, a process where dialogue is re-recorded in a studio to improve audio quality. Eric noted on Instagram at the time that fans often tell him he sounds just like his dad.

Paige, an Australian model who married Eddie in July 2024, has always been private about family life, choosing to stay off social media entirely.
