What the viral video claimed
A TikTok creator known as Mayowa’s World argued in a video dissecting Lauryn Hill and Marley’s relationship that Marley had done Lauryn Hill wrong, pointing to sadness she hears in Lauryn Hill’s music from that era, the fact the two never legally married despite raising five children together, and Marley’s decision to pursue marriage with other women after their relationship ended. The creator also described some of Hill’s music from that period as self deprecating and suggested her later embrace of religion stemmed from an unhappy relationship.
Hill’s response, in her own words
Lauryn Hill showed up in the comment section herself, something she rarely does, and pushed back on the idea that she was simply wronged. She acknowledged that some of the self critical read on her music was fair, but was direct that she did not consider herself a victim in the relationship. She explained her frustration with Marley had more to do with his reluctance to confront his own unresolved trauma in a way that could have helped keep their family together, rather than any single betrayal.
Lauryn Hill also framed both of them as having entered the relationship already carrying past hurts, describing it as two people trying to help each other heal rather than one person harming the other. She extended that grace further by invoking Marley’s father, Bob Marley, noting that imperfect people can still do meaningful things and that struggle does not cancel out someone’s ability to grow or contribute something valuable.

The cheating rumor she’s already debunked
This is not the first time this year Lauryn Hill has corrected the public record on her relationship with Marley. In May, while publicly wishing him a happy birthday, she directly denied longstanding rumors that he had cheated on her, describing him warmly as a protector and defender of their family. Marley responded to that tribute in kind, thanking her and noting that although they no longer live together, the relationship’s core affection remains. That exchange directly contradicts a persistent but never substantiated rumor that Marley had been unfaithful with a woman described in gossip coverage as both Hill’s assistant and her cousin.
The complicated timeline
Lauryn Hill and Marley’s relationship began in the late 1990s, and they went on to have five children together, Zion, Selah, Joshua, better known today as musician YG Marley, John and Sara, though the couple never legally married despite Lauryn Hill sometimes referring to Marley as her husband. Exactly when they separated is not entirely clear, with reporting placing it sometime between 2009 and 2011, and Lauryn Hill has previously described the relationship as marked by long periods of separation over the years.
One detail worth clarifying directly, since it is easy to misread, Lauryn Hill’s sixth child, a son born in 2011, was not fathered by Marley, even though his birth coincided with reports that Marley had become involved with Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana around the same period.
Marley has spoken about the breakup with regret of his own, saying in a 2013 interview that he loved Lauryn Hill deeply but failed to express it in a way she could fully understand, and that he was heartbroken when the relationship ended. He went on to get engaged to Fontana, though that engagement ended, then married Brazilian model Barbara Fialho in 2019, a marriage that included one child together and lasted about a year. Marley became engaged again in 2025.
More than a decade past the end of their romantic relationship, Lauryn Hill and Marley appear to have settled into a functional co-parenting relationship, and Hill’s comment made clear she has little interest in letting outside narratives flatten that history into a simple story of victim and villain. As of this writing, Marley has not publicly responded to the specific video that prompted Lauryn Hill’s comment.
