The ESSENCE Festival of Culture is returning to New Orleans this July with a renewed focus on storytelling, creativity and community. Organizers have announced a lineup of influential women who will help shape the festival’s programming, marking a continued evolution in how the event brings culture to life.
Joining Chief Curator Teyana Taylor are Mara Brock Akil, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Nina Compton. Together, they will guide the festival’s creative direction across multiple disciplines, from literature and television to food and immersive experiences.
A collaborative approach to storytelling
This year’s festival introduces a curatorial model that places each woman at the center of a specific cultural lane. The goal is to create a more intentional and layered experience for attendees, with programming that reflects a wide spectrum of Black expression.
Teyana Taylor joins Mara Brock Akil, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Nina Compton to shape a multidimensional festival experience. Taylor, as Chief Curator, will oversee the festival’s overall creative vision. Her role connects the various elements, including music, film and live performances, ensuring a cohesive experience that reflects both artistry and innovation.
This approach signals a shift from traditional festival planning toward a more collaborative framework, where cultural leaders help shape the narrative in real time.

Elevating literature and legacy
A major highlight of the 2026 event is the focus on literature. Hannah Jones and Brock Akil will co-curate the festival’s authors programming, bringing together voices that explore history, identity and the Black experience.
Hannah Jones, known for her work examining American history and its lasting impact, brings a journalistic lens rooted in research and storytelling. Brock Akil, whose television work often centers on relationships and generational narratives, adds a creative perspective grounded in emotional depth.
Together, they are expected to guide conversations that go beyond surface-level discussions, encouraging audiences to engage with stories that inform and inspire.

Celebrating food and cultural tradition
On the culinary side, Compton will lead the ESSENCE Food & Wine Festival, returning with a vision shaped by her Caribbean heritage and her ties to New Orleans.
Her approach blends tradition with innovation, highlighting the flavors and techniques that define Black food culture while embracing new ideas. Food has long been a central part of the ESSENCE Festival experience, and this year’s programming aims to deepen that connection.
Through curated tastings, demonstrations and discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to explore how cuisine reflects history, community and creativity.

A broader vision for community and impact
The expansion of the curatorial model also reflects the direction of Sundial Media & Technology Group, the festival’s parent organization. The company has been investing in experiences that merge storytelling with community engagement and economic opportunity.
This vision positions the festival as more than an annual gathering. It becomes a space where culture, business and creativity intersect, offering both inspiration and tangible impact.
Technology is also playing a larger role this year. The ESSENCE 360 app will allow attendees to personalize their schedules, access exclusive content and navigate the event more efficiently, enhancing the overall experience.
What attendees can expect
As the festival returns, the emphasis remains on creating meaningful connections through culture. From live performances to panel discussions and culinary showcases, the programming is designed to reflect the richness and diversity of Black experiences.
With four influential women guiding its direction, the ESSENCE 2026 edition aims to build on its legacy while introducing new ways for audiences to engage. The combination of music, storytelling and food creates a multidimensional environment that continues to evolve with each year.
Tickets for the evening concert series are currently available, with more announcements expected as the event approaches.
